Breaking the Stigma: Why Therapy is for Everyone

By Natalie Kraft MA, LPC, LCADC, ACS

Welcome to the inaugural blog post of Sage Sea! What better way to start things off than by acknowledging Mental Health Awareness Month? The month of May is dedicated to shedding light on mental health issues and promoting the emotional well-being of individuals across the globe. While we’ve come a long way in destigmatizing conversations around mental health, there’s still work to be done in encouraging proactive approaches to mental wellness. One such approach is therapy, not just as a treatment for mental illness but as a valuable tool for overall health and well-being.

The Current Landscape of Mental Health

Mental health challenges are more prevalent than many realize:

  • 1 in 5 U.S. adults report experiencing mental illness each year.
  • 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6–17 are reported as experiencing a mental health disorder annually.

These statistics highlight the importance of having accessible mental health treatment available and accepted by those who need it. Just as we can all experience a cold or flu from time to time, we can also each experience mental health challenges such as anxiety and depressive episodes.

But while the above statistics underscore the prevalence of mental illness, knowing that at least 3 in 4 people who engage in therapy report experiencing benefits, highlights its efficacy and provides hope.

Therapy: Beyond Treating Illness

Although therapy is normally associated with treating the aforementioned mental health challenges, its benefits can extend far beyond that. Therapy can help in:

  • Enhancing Self-Awareness: Therapy provides a safe, impartial space to explore thoughts and emotions, leading to greater self-awareness.
  • Improving Relationships: By developing better communication and coping skills, individuals can foster healthier relationships.
  • Managing Stress (which we all experience): Therapeutic techniques can equip individuals with tools to handle everyday stressors more effectively.
  • Promoting Personal Development: Therapy encourages goal setting and personal growth, aiding individuals in reaching their full potential.

Breaking the Stigma

Despite the prevalence of mental health issues and the proven benefits of therapy, many still hesitate to seek treatment due to continued stigma. It’s crucial to recognize that seeking help is a sign of maturity, responsibility, and strength, not weakness. Therapy is a proactive step towards maintaining mental health, much like regular exercise is for physical health.

In the same way that we have routine “well visits” with our primary care physicians to monitor our physical health, perhaps one day it will be just as normal to receive regular “check-ups” from our mental health care providers.
